Entry for September 01, 2008

There’s a nice slide show at the Siddha Yoga website.
I’ve been chanting the Guru Gita more lately.
I chanted it yesterday. It gets difficult because it is so long and the words are hard to pronounce and their meanings elusive, but you can do it. You must be patient. I remember that the Guru Gita is said to be the Guru herself.
Ah, there’s the rub. Guru Gita is all in the male tense, so to speak. It is after all a dialogue between Shiva and Parvati occurring I think at the dawn of time. It was written, I believe by Pushpadanta, an author of Shaivite texts, particularly the Shiva Mahimna Stotram.
I don’t know though.
Obviously, in India, a woman being the Guru is something new.
In Peace is Possible, a book about Guru Maharaji or Prem Rawat, Andrea Cagan tells how Maharaj’s older sister was passed by because she was female. His older brother too was overlooked for lack of his closeness to his father or lack of awareness of the techniques of knowledge. It was Maharaj that taught him the techniques after getting them from his father, a story that is of some interest to those aware of the intricacies of the child-parent relationship.
So, remember, even though the Gita refers to the Guru as “he”, the Guru is in fact “her.”
